2022 Rivian R1T Towing Capacity

The 2022 Rivian R1T is one of the most anticipated vehicle releases in recent years. The Rivian R1T is an all-electric, battery-powered, light duty pickup truck produced by the American company Rivian.  The R1T was officially revealed at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show and is finally expected to be released in the 2022 model year. Rivian is also expected to release  an SUV and a sedan eventually.

2022 Rivian R1T Overview

The Rivian R1T technically comes in one trim level and 3 available trims packages: Launch Edition, Adventure Package and Explore Package. These packages offer varying design, comfort and technology offerings. Despite the differing packages, the Rivian R1T is built on one platform, therefore, the capability specs remain the same across the 3 trim packages.

How much can the 2022 Rivian R1T tow?

The 2022 Rivian R1T can tow up to 11,000 pounds when properly equipped. The Rivian R1T comes equipped with one powertrain, the Quad-Motor Drive. Four motors deliver instant power and torque individually to each wheel for precision traction control. The Rivian Quad-Motor Drive comprises 2 dual-motor drive units. One drive unit powers the front axle and another powers the rear axle. The drive unit powering the front axle delivers up to 415 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque.  The rear drive unit delivers an even more impressive 420 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. While you may not think of power when you think of electric trucks, the Rivian R1T  offers comparable output to the most popular gasoline-powered trucks on the market.

Rivian R1T Versus the Competition

The Rivian R1T, with its Quad-Motor Drive, can produce up to 835 max horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque. This allows the R1T to tow up to 11,000 pounds, even on steep graded inclines. The highly anticipated Ford F-150 Lightning is also expected to be released in the 2022 model year. The Ford F-150 Lightning is expected to have 563 max horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque. All said, the Ford F-150 Lightning is expected to tow up to 10,000 pounds when properly equipped. As you can see, the Rivian R1T has a slight edge over the F-150 Lightning in regards to power and towing capacity.

The comparable gasoline-powered trucks are still the best choice if towing capacity is your primary goal. The Ford F-150 can tow up to 14,000 pounds when equipped with its 3.5L Ecoboost V6. The Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 also offer better towing power than the Rivian R1T. Still, the 11,000 pound capability in the Rivian pickup keeps this electric-powered vehicle in the same ballpark. The Rivian R1T is perfectly capable of towing most family boats and campers.
